In order to impress a med. school admissions committee you need to be well-rounded yet experienced in the correct fields. Some great ways to gain experience is by volunteering your time. This is great because it shows that you have a true interest in the field, a passion for helping people and that you are serious about gaining experience.
When deciding what volunteer experience to gain before applying to med school, think about what type of Medicine you may want to go into. If you are looking at going into pediatrics then volunteer at a children’s hospital. There are so many opportunities at a children’s hospital from pushing this kids through the halls in their chairs, reading stories to them, and interacting with their parents and siblings.
If you aren’t sure about the pediatrics field, then volunteer at a local hospital, doctors office or clinic. Most places are looking for someone to help with office work, or patient care. Remember, people always like cheap workers!
One of the most rewarding ways to volunteer in the medical field is to volunteer at a skilled nursing facility or nursing home. Most of the patients there just want someone to spend some time with and talk to and any volunteer should be able to do that! Playing card games or watching a game show is an enjoyable way to spend your time and will brighten someone’s day while you can observe the medical goings-on of the facility and gain valuable experience. If you like what you see, keep going: COMS Interactive: Health IT firm aims to reduce hospital readmissions
